Are we ready to accept the Internet became too closed and centralized?

This tweet from Marcel Schmitz sums up really nicely what we need to learn from what happened yesterday (and other recent outages…), besides not being able to send memes and hitting like on our favorite photos.

Are we ready to accept the Internet is becoming a “black box” we know nothing about? Are ready to accept that the platforms we use to communicate, regardless how big, are under a single private entity’s infrastructure? Are we ready to accept that what we know about the algorithm that puts our businesses in the first page of the search results or in the timeline of our audience is pretty much the same what we have on how the stars influence our lives?

Maybe it’s time the Internet to evolve to something open, decentralized, distributed and federated, if not not only we will loose control of it, but whole countries as well…
